Particular problems with reading

· Problems with tracking, misses words, skips lines, misreads words.
· May read mechanically but has no idea of what has been read.
· Often has to re-read a passage several times before it is understood.
· Does not see punctuation, reads until breath runs out.
· Avoids reading.
· Reading is a real chore, gets excessively tired when reading.
Characteristics of dyslexia and related problems in children

· Problems learning to read and write.
· Finds whole word recognition easier to phonics.
· Does not appear to hear sounds.
· Often reprimanded for not listening.
· Finds it difficult to sit still, often wriggly.
· Very sensitive to criticism.
· Daydreams.
· Good at building and construction toys.
· It is extremely important that your child likes his/her teacher to do well in class.
· Finds it difficult to complete tasks.
· Has a tendency to act first and think later.
· Needs constant reminders to do things, forgets instructions.
· Can be extremely competitive and a poor looser.
· Remembers visual facts better than names.
· Can be a perfectionist to such an extent that it will interfere with continuing with new hobbies.
· Labelled lazy, stupid, or immature.
· Gets angry and frustrated, often leading to abandoning a task.
· Finds it difficult to be on time, and have schoolwork organised.
· Will constantly loose items of clothing at school.
· Homework will not be written down, books may be in the wrong place.
· Maybe hypersensitive to labels or sounds.
· Persistent reversal of letters and numbers, p and q, 71 and 17
· Difficulty in telling the time, tables, sequences of the days of the week and the months of the year.
· Problems with left and right.
· Remembers spellings for the weekly test but then forgets them.
· Learns best by hands on experience and visual aids.
· Finds it difficult to copy from the whiteboard.
