Finishing the Davis® programme, just like many learning situations, is the beginning of the journey rather than the end. It is at this point you have the tools to:
· Be orientated or aligned.
· Tell when you are disorientated.
· Understand how to use dial and release.
· Know the value and how to do symbol mastery.
· Have the technique to do sweep sweep spell enabling reading accuracy to develop.
· Have the technique to do picture at punctuation to enable the mind to remember what has been read on the first time of reading; to have an accurate comprehension of whet has been read.
· Partake in Koosh Ball exercises.
By using what you have experienced in your programme you will reduce and get rid of the negative aspects of dyslexia. For the programme to be a success it is vital that all the above are woven in your day-to-day life.
The importance of symbol mastery.
It is often easy to remember to use orientation or alignment in the months following the programme. A feeling of being present in a learning situation is a pleasant experience. The value of koosh balls, dial, release and the reading exercises also has instant feedback but the importance of symbol mastery can be neglected.
These little words known as “trigger words,” or “high frequency words” will unless mastered in clay, continue to create confusion. These words are constantly faced when reading and continued confusion will in time build up and result in an inability to stop this by simply using orientation or alignment.
Symbol mastery is a powerful tool and if introduced in a fun way will not be seen as a chore. It is valuable in all subject areas as well as making visual sense of those confusing little words.
